Whether you are looking to get away for a week or just a few days Yamba on the NSW mid-north coast is a beautiful coastal town to visit.
Yamba is located in the Clarence Coast area of NSW a bit over 270 kilometres south of Brisbane, making it a perfect weekend destination for Queenslanders.
YAMBA
In Yamba you will find six beautiful surf beaches, all of which are quite sheltered so are ideal for families. Whiting Beach was a hit with our kids and from there you can I walk out along the break wall. On the other side of the breakwall is Turners Beach, which is also a lovely sheltered beach. Looking north from there you can see the smaller village of Iluka which is located on the northern side of the Clarence River.
CLARENCE HEAD LIGHTHOUSE
Overlooking Turners Beach and Main Beach is the Clarence Head Lighthouse. Built in 1955 it replaced the original lighthouse which was built in the 1800’s. A group of community volunteers raised funds and built a replica of the original lighthouse and lighthouse keepers cottage, which now houses the community radio station.
The views from the headland where the lighthouse sits are just spectacular. The large grassy area is also the perfect spot to enjoy a picnic lunch.
ANGOURIE
Angourie is a small village located just a 10 minute drive from Yamba. Nestled on the border of the Yuraygir National Park, there are plenty of surfing and bush walking opportunities here. We checked out the beautifully secluded Back Beach, which is a great spot for a surf.
Angourie also has two freshwater swimming holes known as the Blue Pool and the Green Pool. These were the result of an old ironstone quarry and are a popular spot for swimming and a little bit of cliff jumping.
SHOPPING IN YAMBA
Yamba has loads of trendy boutiques, gift shops and coffee shops. Most of the shops were a bit out of our price range but we still managed to find a couple of bargains. We also had a lovely ice coffee and cake at Bean Scene which is on Yamba Street.

ILUKA
Iluka is a small town located across the Clarence River from Yamba. A novel way to visit Iluka is to catch the local ferry across the river from Yamba. Or if you choose to drive, it will take you about 20 minutes. Iluka is home to the very popular Woody Head Campground in the Bundjalung National Park. It is a beachfront campground and very popular with families. Iluka Beach is close to the North Wall and very sheltered, so again perfect for families.

It was a lovely spot…very relaxing and great sheltered beaches so perfect for kids.
I love camping in Yamba – it’s a great family spot. But I hate when it is windy when you are in a tent, it always seems much worse than it actually is. Although, the last time we got worried about the wind we looked at the weather radar and there was a huge black storm passing right over us. Afterwards we found out there was hail and power lines down just a couple of hundred meters down from us. Eek!
We have been in a couple of bad storms now…fortunately the tent and trailer have stood up to the test both times.
This looks a fabulous place for a relaxing holiday. Jumping into the pool from a dizzy height looks fun for teenagers, perhaps you’d find me sitting on the beach though!
