One of the things we love most about the Gold Coast is how many gorgeous beaches and waterways there are to explore. When we are looking for somewhere to go for a day out we love to head south and go exploring the Tweed Coast.
KINGSCLIFF AND CUDGEN CREEK
Turning left at Tweed Heads will land you at the northern end of Kingscliff. Kingscliff is a lovely laid back spot with a real village atmosphere. It boasts a beautiful long beach, two beachfront
At the southern end of Kingscliff, you will find Cudgen Creek. A lovely clear inlet with break-walls on both sides. This was the perfect spot for a walk in the sun. We have previously seen dolphins playing in this inlet. But on this occasion, there were just a couple of paddle boarders (you can hire them) and a couple of fishermen.
One gentleman that I was chatting with hauled in 3 good sizes of blackfish in the space of about 10 minutes. He told me they were quite good eating provided you ‘bled’ them as soon as you caught them. Interestingly he said he uses cabbage as bait to catch them and it certainly seemed to be working well! On the other side of Cudgen Creek, there is more beach access as well as plenty of grassed picnic areas with BBQs and picnic tables.
NORRIES HEADLAND
Continuing south, you will find the flourishing beach-side suburb of Casuarina and the smaller town of Cabarita Beach. Despite loads of holiday accommodation it still has that sleepy beachside village feel to it. It also sports one of the best lookouts along the Tweed Coast – Norries Headland. The walk up to Norries Headland is not too strenuous. It has steps and a boardwalk most of the way and once at the top, the view is amazing! I could have spent the rest of the day just sitting there and taking in the view.
There is a great park at the bottom of the headland walk. There is an awesome kids playground area and plenty of shady picnic areas and BBQ’s, as well as clean amenities.
MOOBALL
Just a little further south are two more awesome seaside towns – Hastings Point and Pottsville, but our destination for lunch was a little further inland…the tiny village of Mooball and the Moo Moo Roadhouse.
Located on the Tweed Valley Way, the Moo Moo Roadhouse is one of Brenden’s regular stops in his truck and he had been promising to take me there for some time. Apart from being a great spot to stop for lunch, it also has some interesting motorcycle memorabilia and a few other bits and pieces from days gone by on display. Anyone that is a bit of a bike enthusiast will enjoy having a look about it.
The food menu is small but tasty and they make a great cup of coffee as well. While you are waiting for your food you can brush up on the history of some of our motor-racing greats. Each table has pictures and bios of the likes of Peter Brock, Casey Stoner, Barry Sheene and Mick Doohan laminated on them.
MOUNT WARNING
Our last stop for the day was a very quick look into the Mount Warning National Park. It was much too late in the afternoon to even think about climbing it. It is almost a full day’s hike, but it is something I would like to do with the kids one day. Aside from that, the area is very pretty and as it is so close to the Gold Coast it would be ideal for a weekend getaway. The camp area at Mt Warning Rainforest Park is spacious and grassy. Campfires are allowed in designated spots so that is always a plus for us! The rest of the park looks a little ‘tired’ but it also appears that some work is being done about the place. It is definitely a spot we will head back to in the near future.

We have been very busy and no the kids won’t do home schooling as they will be finished and off doing their own thing. One is currently in Yr 11 and the other is in Yr10.
