With the arrival of the glorious Spring weather it was definitely time to go camping again. Our chosen destination this time was Bigriggen Park.
Located just out of Rathdowney in the gorgeous Scenic Rim Bigriggen is a bush style camp area. Situated on about 100 acres it is bordered by the Logan River and Burnett Creek.
Peace And Quiet
If it’s some peace and quiet you are after then Bigriggen may be just the spot for you. It is an easy hour and half drive from either Brisbane or the Gold Coast.
The park itself is open and spacious with plenty of trees dotted throughout. There is a basic amenities block with coin-operated showers and toilets and also a dump point for caravans etc. You are also able to have a camp fire there (provided there are no fire bans in place). We love being able to have a campfire. It’s something that we think makes our camping experience that bit more special.
Easy Set Up
As we had not used our camper over winter we were really happy that we were still able to set it up so quickly and easily and that it did not smell at all. When we were looking round for our trailer we did look at a couple of second-hand ones and at least 2 of them had a terrible musty smell to them.
This indicated to us that they had probably been put away wet at some stage. It is essential that your trailer or tent is completely dry before you pack it away to prevent that musty smell and to prevent mould from growing which is very hard to remove from canvas.
On The River’s Edge
Once we were all set up up the kids and I set off to explore the park. There are a few tracks down to the river and at the far end of the park there is a fantastic swimming hole. The river was not fast flowing when we were there so would be great for kids and canoes or blow up boats. The entrance into the water is nice and sandy and not to many rocks, so is great for the littlies to play on the edge.
Local Wildlife
One of the things that I loved about Bigriggen was the abundance of birds and wildlife. There seemed to be a whole family of Kookaburra’s in the park and they were not worried by our presence at all. But the definite highlight were the possums that came out when it got dark. They were only a couple of metres from our campfire and nibbled happily on some lettuce scraps.
There were three all up. A mother with a baby on her back and one on his own who was very curious. He came up close to Brenden’s chair several times. He even had a sniff around under our awning and tried to climb up a tent pole to get to our rubbish bag. So I made sure I took it the bins before we went to bed. I also made sure that all other food stuffs were put away. We once lost a whole packet of bread rolls to a bush turkey and went without bread for the weekend so I am a bit more careful now!
Bigriggen Park is also close to Maroon Dam, which is a great place to water ski or fish. If you are a bush-walker, Mt Barney National Park is just a bit further down the road.
We found Bigriggen Park to be very restful and relaxing and we would be happy to camp there again.
