The Gorge Camping Reserve is one of those places that you hear about via word of mouth. It is a privately owned camping reserve and is ‘bush camping’ at its finest. There are a couple of toilets near the entrance plus a couple of bush-style showers. The owners limit the number of campers allowed at any one time so you can be guaranteed to set up in your own little piece of paradise with limited interruption from other people.
Bush Camping Lake Moggerah
The Gorge is located on Reynolds Creek on the far side of Lake Moggerah. The creek is narrow and shallow at first and then opens up into wider, deeper water. It is a perfect spot for swimming or kayaking. The track into the bottom camping section is probably only suitable for 4WD vehicles especially if it happens to be wet.
However, we did see a couple of people come down in cars and one group even towed a
Relax At The Gorge Camping Grounds
Camping at The Gorge is all about relaxing and letting the kids go off exploring and swimming. We bought our two blow-up boats which they had an absolute blast in. I don’t think they got out of the water for most of the day. I spent a few hours sitting in a chair on the water’s edge with a book and a beer!
Campfire Are Allowed At The Gorge Camping Ground
Even though it was warm when we camped at The Gorge campground, we couldn’t resist having a fire. So many places don’t allow fires, so we jump at any opportunity to start one. There is something truly peaceful about sitting around a campfire. It is a great way to unwind.
The other great part of The Gorge Camping Reserve is there is no ‘check-out’ time so we were able to take our time packing up.
Beware Of The Wildlife
It being early summer, we thought we would go for a refreshing swim before heading home. At this point, I should probably add a word of caution—beware of the Wildlife!
We walked to the swimming hole at the far end of the camp area. The kids jumped straight into the water and headed for a rope swing on the other side of the river. I headed in as well but didn’t go as far as the kids as it was a little too cold for me.
I had only been in the water a few moments when hubby pointed out a huge brown snake coming out of the water near where we had gone in.
It was a scorching day and I had kept an eye out for snakes as we walked along the track but had not expected to see one in the water. He came out of the water, across the walking track, and into the bush; that was the last we saw of him.
He wasn’t interested in us, which was good. I don’t think that I realised how well they could swim.
And Spiders
We also found a huge tarantula-like spider when we rolled one of our window awnings down.
We also saw a lovely big goanna sunning himself on a fallen log, but he didn’t come near our campsite. So whenever bush camping, be aware that you may be sharing your space with other locals.
Keep your tent zipped up and be cautious when unrolling tent flaps, packing up chairs and groundsheets or collecting firewood.
The Gorge Camping Reserve near Lake Moggerah offers a serene escape into nature, immersing you in a truly peaceful environment. With limited campers, beautiful surroundings, and various activities like swimming and kayaking, it’s a perfect retreat for those seeking a genuine bush camping experience.
However, amidst the beauty of this natural haven, visitors are reminded to stay vigilant and respectful of the local wildlife that also calls this place home.
So, pack your sense of adventure and caution and enjoy a memorable getaway at The Gorge Camping Reserve.

Can I get my Suzuki swift on to the site? I need to come after work and don’t know whether my car will get on site or not
Hi Paula….I would contact them to ask that question. It has been a couple of years since we were there so I don’t know what condition the entrance would be in. Either way you will definitely not get it into the bottom section.
Hahaha 🙂 I’ve driven my little ford focus down to the bottom section safely. Enjoy The Gorge. Its our family favourite to go. As long as your 2wd isn’t to low, anyone can drive down to the bottom area.
Ha ha…..you were gamer than me. Although I guess it would just be a matter of being careful!
OMG…. I took my family there back in the 70’s… There was a group of us, someone had a ski boat and we spent the day in what I remember as a beautiful place….. Wow, to have that memory dragged up from the past. I shall put the place on my list to visit next time I am up that way.
Glad you enjoyed it…..The Gorge is still a beautiful spot. Very peaceful for a weekend of R & R.
