Caravan Sheets: What Actually Fits (And What Doesn’t)

You don’t realise caravan sheets and caravan bedding are going to be an issue until you’re actually living with it.

When we first hit the road, I used normal queen-sized sheets for one reason, and it had nothing to do with convenience or fit. My sheets for the caravan were bought by my late Mum. It was the last thing she bought me, so of course they came with us.

I knew they weren’t ideal for a caravan bed, but at the time, that didn’t matter.

For nearly three years, those sheets were on our bed almost constantly. Washed, dried, and straight back on again.

Eventually, they wore out. Properly wore out with holes in the bottom sheet and pillow cases we’d used them that much.

And that’s when I finally had to admit, standard sheets and caravan beds just don’t work that well together.

We eventually switched to caravan-specific sheets (I’ll share what we use further down below in this article).

Why Normal Sheets Don’t Work in Caravans

Bed sheets vs caravan sheets

Caravan beds aren’t like beds at home.

Most have rounded corners, different dimensions, and awkward shapes like island beds or short queens. Even if you manage to get a standard fitted sheet on, it rarely sits properly.

You end up with loose corners, fabric bunching up, or the sheet slipping or pulling off during the night.

Layouts are changing as well.

I’m seeing more and more vans now with beds pushed hard up against one wall, or even full-width king beds that span the entire van. While they can be great for space and comfort, they make access tighter, which turns an already awkward job into something you’re constantly working around.

Standard sheets are simply designed for home beds, not for these shapes, sizes, and layouts. So even when they “fit,” they don’t really work the way they should.

It might seem like a small thing, but when you’re dealing with it every day, it quickly becomes one of those annoyances that wears thin. Especially if you have bunks to make as well.

What to Look for in Caravan Sheets

Caravan bedding

Once I had to replace ours, I realised pretty quickly that not all sheets are created equal, especially when it comes to caravan beds.

There are a few things that make a real difference, and if you get this right from the start, you’ll save yourself a lot of frustration.

The first is the fit around the corners. Most caravan mattresses have rounded corners, particularly island beds, and standard fitted sheets are made for square mattresses. Caravan-specific sheets are designed to follow that shape properly, so they stay put instead of constantly pulling loose.

Depth is another one that catches caravanners out. If you’ve added a mattress topper, which a lot of us do for comfort, your mattress is now thicker than standard. If the sheet doesn’t allow for that extra height, it will constantly pull off at the corners.

Then there’s how the sheet stays on. Some people prefer traditional fitted sheets, while others like zipped systems where the top layer attaches to the base. It can make life easier, especially when you’re dealing with tight spaces or making a bed that’s hard to access from both sides.

Fabric matters more than you might think as well. Caravans heat up quickly, especially in summer, and heavier fabrics can make sleeping uncomfortable. Breathable materials like cotton or bamboo blends tend to be a better option, particularly if you’re travelling through tropical parts of Australia.

And finally, it’s about how secure the sheet feels once it’s on. A snug fit that doesn’t shift around with everyday use makes a noticeable difference to both comfort and convenience.

It sounds like a small thing, but once you’re living in a van, these little details are the difference between something that works and something that annoys you every single day.

Best Caravan Sheets for Comfort on the Road

From the very beginning, we’ve always used a mattress topper and protector from DreamerRV.

It made a big difference to comfort straight away, but it also added extra height to the mattress, which made the sheet issue even more obvious.

Those original sheets from my Mum still went on the bed, but they were never designed for that setup. Between the rounded corners and the added depth from the topper, they were always a compromise. They looked fine when first made, but by morning we’d wake up to scrunched sheets and loose sides.

After they finally wore out, I wasn’t going back to dealing with that every day.

I’d already seen plenty of caravanners recommending MeanderWild, so I decided to try them for myself.

The biggest difference was the fit. The corners actually match the mattress shape, so you’re not constantly pulling and adjusting. Once they’re on, they stay put.

They also handle the extra depth from the DreamerRV topper underneath, properly which was a big one for us.

We use the zipped system, and it works really well in a caravan. Kev likes to hang his feet out the end of the bed, so he can just unzip his side without disturbing the rest of the bed.

They’re also much easier to deal with in tight spaces. Making an island bed or bunks is never the easiest job, but having sheets that fit properly takes a lot of the frustration out of it.

In terms of comfort, the whole setup works. The topper adds support, and the sheets are breathable enough to stay comfortable, even in summer.

They’re not the cheapest option, but when you’re using them every day, it’s one of those things worth getting right.

I’ve had quite a few people ask what we use, so if you do decide to give them a go, you can use the code AllAroundOz for 10% off here.

Other Caravan Sheet Options (and What to Expect)

There’s more than one way to deal with caravan bedding, and not everyone goes straight to caravan-specific sheets.

Some people stick with standard sheets and make them work. You’ll often see things like cheaper sheets from Kmart or Target, elastic straps, sheet clips, or even DIY adjustments to try and keep everything in place.

It can work, especially if you’re only away for shorter trips, but it does usually mean more effort every time you make the bed. No thanks!

And that’s the part a lot of people underestimate.

In a caravan, making the bed is a daily job. It’s not something you can just shut the door on and deal with later. Once the bed is made, your home on wheels instantly looks half tidy. If it’s not, the whole space feels messy.

Caravan Mattress Depth

Another thing that catches people out is the difference in mattress depth.

Most standard home mattresses are deeper, so the sheets are made with deeper sides to match. Caravan mattresses are often thinner, so those same sheets don’t sit snugly.

Instead of fitting neatly, you end up with excess fabric, loose corners, and sheets that shift around more than they should.

Once you’ve seen the difference, it makes sense why they never quite feel right.

So while the cheaper or DIY options can get you by, they do tend to come with that ongoing trade-off of time and effort every single day.

Custom Made Caravan Sheets

Custom-made sheets are another option. These are made to fit your exact mattress shape and size, which solves the fit issue completely. The downside is that they can take time to organise and can be on the more expensive side, depending on where you get them made.

There are also other caravan-specific bedding brands that are designed for rounded corners and different mattress sizes. These can be a good option as well, particularly if they match your layout and budget.

At the end of the day, it comes down to how often you’re using your van and how much convenience matters to you.

If you’re away occasionally, you might be happy to work around it. If you’re travelling regularly or living in your van, having something that fits properly and stays put makes a big difference to your day-to-day comfort.

Sleep Quality

And then there’s sleep, which is something you don’t want to compromise on when you’re travelling.

When you’re on the road, you’re often driving long distances, setting up, packing down, and adjusting to different environments. If you’re not sleeping well, you feel it pretty quickly.

The more comfortable your bed setup is, the better-quality sleep you’ll get. And that doesn’t just come down to the mattress or topper, it’s the whole setup working together.

If your sheets are constantly coming loose, bunching up, pulling off at the corners, or slipping off, it’s surprisingly disruptive. You end up fixing them during the night or waking up uncomfortable without really realising why.

When everything fits properly and stays in place, and you have a comfortable pillow, you sleep better. It’s as simple as that.

Are Caravan Sheets Worth It?

From someone who had used both conventional and caravan sheets, I wouldn’t use anything else. Life is too short to waste time wrangling caravan bed making!

If you’re only heading away for the odd weekend here and there (and let’s face it, most people use their van a lot), you might be happy to make standard sheets work.

But if you’re planning a big lap of Australia, caravanning regularly, or travelling full-time, living in your van like we are, it’s a different story.

When you’re making the bed every day, dealing with sheets that don’t quite fit, pull off at the corners, slip off the end of the mattress, or bunch up during the night becomes more than just a minor annoyance. It’s something you’re constantly fixing.

That’s where caravan-specific sheets start to make a lot more sense.

They’re designed for the shape and size of caravan mattresses, so they fit properly, stay in place, and take a lot of the hassle out of daily life on the road.

For us, once we made the switch, it was one of those small changes that made a noticeable difference. It’s not about making things perfect, it’s about making them easier.

And when you’re living in a small space, those little wins add up quickly.

If you’re setting your van up properly, this is one of those small upgrades that makes a difference. If you go with the same setup we use, the code AllAroundOz will get you 10% off.
