If you are looking for an awesome family friendly and large camp ground then you really can’t go past Cobb and Co Nine Mile Camping Ground.

This giant camp oven is at the entrance to Cobb and Co Camp Ground.

Cobb and Co Nine Mile Camping Ground is located just two hours drive from the Gold Coast near Tandur (Gympie). The camp ground is set in a rural area almost completely surrounded by trees. There are so many flat, grassy spots that you can set up anywhere.  There is a great billabong where the kids can swim or canoe.

But the best thing is being able to have a campfire. If you happen to travel with your fur babies then pets are welcome as well.  There are also basic amenities there consisting of toilets and showers.  Although the shower water was only dam water it was lovely and hot. They also have loads of organised activities to keep the kids entertained during the school holidays.

This large billabong in the middle of the campground is the perfect spot for the kids to cool off.

It didn’t take us long to get ourselves set up and the kids soon headed off for a swim. I took the opportunity to wander around with my lovely new camera (an early birthday present).  It was soon time to light the camp fire and settle in for the evening.  The evening was a little on the cool side which made it perfect camp fire weather.

CARRIAGE DRIVING

The following morning Miss Oz and I headed up the road to a Carriage Driving Event organised by the Cooloola Carriage Club.  Although I have spent a bit of time around horses in my younger days, I had never seen anything like this.  I was amazed at the speed and agility of the horses and the teamwork of the carriage drivers and their navigators. It was a very enjoyable morning.

WOONDUM NATIONAL PARK

After lunch we went for a drive through the Woondum National Park which is just down the road from Cobb and Co.  It is a beautiful area where you will find the Mount Mothar Rock Pools.  This would be a lovely spot for a picnic and a swim however the water was a bit chilly when we visited.

The road past the Rock Pools is suitable only for 4-wheel drive vehicles.  Some sections of the road had large corrugates washed in them. Other sections were very wet and soft.  At the end of the road if you turn left you will find yourself at the James McKane Memorial Lookout. This lookout offers amazing views of the whole of the Pomona, Cooroy and Kin Kin areas. There were also some picnic tables, wood BBQ’s and toilets.

CAMP FIRE COOKING

Back at camp it was time to get the camp fire going for the night. I was going to have my first attempt at cooking in a camp oven.  I had a small leg of lamb to roast along with some vegies.  And I must say for my first attempt it was possibly one of the best meals I have ever eaten.  I then finished it off with a plain damper.

The next morning as we were starting to pack up we were treated to a visit by several members of the Cooloola Carriage Club.  All the kids (and some of the parents) loved being able to pat the horses. I enjoyed talking to the owners. They were all so enthusiastic about their sport and were more than happy to answer the loads of questions that were asked of them.

All in all we had a fantastic time so we will definitely be back again. But probably not until the weather warms up again!

    • Hi Tony…..thanks for your question. There is a train line that runs adjacent to the property. When we stayed there last (2012) we camped at the front of the property. We did here a train a couple of times but didn’t find them intrusive. I don’t know if the line runs closer to the back of the property or if the train traffic has increased since then but we weren’t bothered by them and I think all the other pluses of Cobb and Co far outweigh the occasional train. It really is an awesome spot! Cheers Mel

  1. Great article. I’ve got family in that area and would love to check out the lookout view next time we visit. Since we are the only ones with a 4×4 we’ll have to limit who can come with us. Do you remember how long the 4×4 track was?

    • From memory it was a few kilometres long…took us about half a day to do the round trip with stops in between.
