After six years of travelling in our camper trailer which could carry so much ‘stuff’, and then more recently doing a couple of trips in a
We had camped a couple of times when our kids were little and I was pretty adept at only taking what we needed. We decided to head to Queen Mary Falls for a couple of nights. So the pressure was on. Could we comfortably camp for two nights with just the basics?
As it turned out we could and we did and we had an awesome time on our Back to Basics Camping trip.
BACK TO BASICS CAMPING – WHAT TO PACK
- A tent or swag should be first on the list.
- Something to sleep on. We took a double air mattress.
- A large picnic mat or similar to put under the air mattress for a bit of insulation if it’s cold.
- We grabbed the quilt and pillows off our bed as we don’t have sleeping bags.
- Something to sit on – comfy camp chairs are a must.
- Firelighters and matches – you have to be able to get that camp fire started.
- Something to cook with. Even though we knew there was a camp kitchen where we were staying we still took the Weber. It’s small enough to fit in the back of the BT50, easy to set up and use. You can throw a camp oven in if you prefer.
- A table – we have a small folding side table and a larger one that slides into our Drifta Drawers. The Weber sits on this.
- Something to eat with- we just used the small picnic set that we keep in the car all the time. It has everything in it that we need.
- A bucket, detergent, tea towel and dish cloth- there are always dishes to be done no matter where you are. With a bucket you can wash up in it or use it to carry your dirty dishes to the camp kitchen.
- Food and drinks – do a Meal Plan before you go so you pack just the right amount of food for the trip.
- Clothes of course – include something warm too!
GETTING SET UP
The best thing about a basic camp set up like this is that it takes no time to set up. It took us around 20 minutes to get set up and light the fire. Packing up afterwards is easy as well. Perfect if you are short on time, but still need a little break away.
