How often have you picked up your gas bottle before you go away and given it a shake, and thought, yeah that’s enough gas? Then the unthinkable happens. Three days into your camping trip and disaster strikes. The flame disappears from under the bacon and eggs that the kids have been wanting since 6.00 am. I would bet that we have all run out of gas at some stage in our adventures, even at home in the backyard.

Now have we got the gadget for you. Check out BMPRO’s SmartSense Gas Level Monitor. One of the latest releases from BMPRO that will tell you exactly how much gas is in that bottle. This little unit eliminates the guesswork before you go away and can monitor your usage as well.

We have been testing a (single) gas bottle monitor for a few days now and it works really well. Once the unit is paired to your smart device it will constantly monitor the gas level in the tank.
Setting Up The BMPRO SmartSense
It’s as easy as this. Open up your App Store or Google Play and search for the free SmartSense App.
The first time the SmartSense is opened you will be greeted by this screen. The app is now searching for the SmartSense unit and waiting for you to pair it.
Ensure your Bluetooth is switched on and press the orange button on the front of the SmartSense. This will pair the device with your phone.
As soon as the Smartsense and your phone are paired you will see this screen. Now you can select the “New LPG Device”.
Now you can give SmartSense gas bottle monitor a name and select the size of the gas tank you will be monitoring. You can also set an alarm threshold that will notify you when the tank gets to that level.
Now we need to attach the SmartSense to the bottom of your gas bottle. Turn the unit over and you will see the two magnets with the rubber sensor in the middle. The rubber sensor is placed in the centre of the bottom of the gas bottle. Give the area where it is to be attached a quick clean and stick it on.
This is the bottom of our gas bottle with the unit attached. Remember that the unit won’t be in the middle of the bottle, as the magnets and sensor are at one end of the SmartSense.
Turn the bottle back to the upright position and when the gas settles you will get an accurate gas level.
What do we think of the SmartSense Gas Level Monitor?
I really like how at the touch of a button on my phone, I can see exactly what is left in the gas tank. Our van is fully set up for indefinite free camping, and knowing what is in each tank is a must. I paired the unit to my phone and then attached it to one of our gas bottles. Within about 3 secs the SmartSense App on my phone relayed a 67% level. I let the bottle sit for a minute as it was upside down when I attached the unit. The level settled at 66%.
The cradles for the gas tanks on our NextGen leave a gap where I can get the SmartSense to the bottom of each bottle without removing them. I took the unit off the gas bottle I had out of the van. After about 5 secs my phone was notifying me that my gas tank was completely empty. I slid the sensor up through the gap above the “A” frame and under the 2nd gas bottle. The alarm stopped and a 99% level was relayed for this gas bottle.
You can also adjust the bottle parameters if you don’t have a standard-size bottle. This will be one of the settings when you first pair the devices. You can also change any settings if you swap to different size bottles later on.
Being able to set a low-level warning/notification is a plus. This is set at 20% default but is adjustable anywhere between 10 – 90%.
The SmartSense is a remote sensor so it does need its own power source. The battery is replaceable and is a common CR2032 flat disc-style battery. It will be interesting to see how long it lasts.
Our Conclusion
I love my ‘techy’ gadgets so the SmartSense will become a very welcome addition to the All Around Oz inventory. The small size of the unit allows us to swap the sensor from one bottle to another easily. The sensor is very light and the magnets seem to have decent strength.
With this in mind though, (unless I forget it), I won’t leave the unit attached to a gas bottle while we are towing the van. It doesn’t need to be bouncing around on our beautiful smooth highways, in the heat, dust and rain.

The unit only comes with 1ml of Synthetic Fluorisilicone Grease, what did you purchase for ongoing application? We’re having trouble finding something with that description.

How far from the Odyssey Link unit are your gas bottles?
I have the tyre pressure monitors installed on our van. They are in close proximity to the unit, but bluetooth connectivity outside of the van is limited, so I can’t monitor the tyre pressures from the car.

Hi Martin, sorry about the late reply. The gas sensor has been great. We don’t leave it attached to the bottle while we are travelling so the only issue has been that the bottom of the gas bottle has to be fairly clean each time we attach it or we get a strange reading or an error/not able to read. We don’t have the Odyssey link, we just use the app on our smart device and it seems to have decent range. Gas bottles are on the front of the van and the app works in the car or van.

Mabey a silly question, but whould it work on a steel water tank?
Hi Yvette, sorry about the late reply. I can’t answer your question but when you set up the gas monitor it asks whether it will be on a 4.5 or 9kg bottle. Maybe if the water tank was the same height as the fluid in a 4.5 or 9kg bottle it might work, though I am not sure. If you send BMPro a message on their contact page I am sure you will get a definite answer.
