Who doesn’t love a nice surprise? I recently surprised our daughter, with a quick trip to the Gold Coast for her birthday. I wanted to find something that we could do together and came across a behind the scenes Sirromet Winery Tour. Now, we both love a glass or two of wine so I knew I had found the perfect outing for us.
LOCATION
Sirromet Winery is located on Mount Cotton Road at Mount Cotton about halfway between Brisbane and the Gold Coast.
HISTORY
Sirromet is a family-owned and run winery that was opened to the public in 2000. It was the brainchild of Queensland businessman Terry Morris. (Can you see where the name Sirromet came from?) Sirromet came about after he was told that there was no such thing as a good Queensland wine.
The grapes used to produce Sirromet’s range of wines are all grown in the Granite Belt region of Queensland. This area around Stanthorpe is renowned for its cool climate wines.
CELLAR DOOR CAFE
We started our day with morning tea at the Cellar Door Cafe. Here you can choose from a selection of cakes and coffee or perhaps a cheese or antipasto platter. Light meals are available on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. All these treats can be enjoyed on the expansive verandah area. It’s a lovely shady spot, with plenty of seating for everyone. On the weekends, they frequently have live music in this area.
WINERY TOUR
Our tour of the winery lasted for an hour. Our tour guide, Patrice was extremely knowledgeable and obviously enthusiastic about the wine industry. The tour started with a brief introduction to the history of Sirromet before we headed into the main winery building.
In this building, you will find Restaurant Lurleen’s. Open for functions and events, Lurleen’s has a stellar reputation for producing fine food. Downstairs is the area known as the Barrel Hall which is an area that is frequently used for functions such as wedding receptions. In fact, it was being set up for a wedding reception that evening and it looked stunning!
From the Barrel Hall, we headed outside and into the processing facility. Here we learnt a little bit about how the grapes are crushed and processed until they become wine. It was a fascinating behind the scenes look at a working winery.
WINE TASTING
After touring the working part of the winery, it was time to head inside for our wine tasting. Held in a separate room behind the cellar door area, we tasted a total of seven wines. These included a sparkling, three whites, two reds and a dessert wine. From the whites, I really enjoyed a 2020 Fiano from their new Granit range, which is both vegan and organic.
We both enjoyed their Vineyard Selection Shiraz which is aged in French Oak for 8 months. Each wine was accompanied by a description of the wine and what we could expect to smell and taste as well. It was a great experience, especially for our daughter as she had never been to a wine tasting before.
TUSCAN TERRACE FINALE
The final part of our Sirromet Winery Tour was a glass of wine of our choice and a cheese platter to share on the beautiful Tuscan Terrace. The Tuscan Terrace is a relaxed indoor/outdoor dining area with views across the area used for A Day on the Green concert events, which are held regularly at Sirromet.
We enjoyed a glass of the Vineyard Selection Sweet Sparkling Rose, which is a lovely Summer bubbly and went perfectly with our cheese platter.
We had an absolutely wonderful morning. It was the perfect mother/daughter activity for us. If you enjoy a glass of wine or two we would highly recommend a visit to Sirromet Winery. Our winery tour cost $94.00 for the two of us which included the winery tour, tasting, cheese platter and two glasses of wine.
