This Urban Caravans review will cover all the information you need to know about Urban Caravans. Plus, the reason we bought an off-road X-Terrain Urban caravan rather than the other off-road Urban Xtreme caravan. This review is not sponsored by Urban Caravans, we paid for our van in full ourselves.

If you’re in the market for a new caravan, you’ve probably come across Urban Caravans. Founded in 2012 by Steve Trajcevski, (with a family caravanning manufacturing history dating back to the 1970s), Urban Caravans specialises in constructing robust titanium welded aluminium bodies on traditionally rugged heavy-duty chassis.

With a range of caravans that are perfect for couples or small families, Urban has something for everyone. Let’s take a closer look at what they have to offer.

Caravans Australia

When we started looking for a caravan for our big laps we followed all the tips in this blog post for buying a caravan.

Initially, we thought we’d buy a second-hand caravan. However, 2020 had other plans, the demand for caravans (old and new) skyrocketed in Australia and we started looking at new caravans.

We really had no clue what to expect in a van. However, we did know we wanted to:

  • have an ensuite
  • buy Australian made
  • stay off-grid as long as possible
  • free camp as often as possible
  • get off the blacktop as much as possible
  • have a good quality off-road van with excellent resell value

Armed with our minuscule list, off we headed to the first Gold Coast caravan and camping show in July 2020 after the initial lockdowns were lifted.

The first caravan we looked through had a great layout with a rear door and club lounge, a kitchen, an ensuite then a bedroom. I loved the layout. It made sense to me to have two separate areas where if one person wanted to read and the other wants to watch TV, it was easily done with that layout.

The quality of the build in that first caravan (I don’t recall the brand) wasn’t that great and the flimsy connecting door from the bedroom to the ensuite fell off when I closed it!

We wandered a little further and stumbled across the Urban Caravans display and immediately saw the difference in the quality of the build of the vans on show. And they had the same configuration that we liked with a centre ensuite.

A quote was drawn up for us on the spot, however, it wasn’t until 7 months later, at another Gold Coast caravan and camping show did we sign for an off-road X-Terrain Urban caravan. With only a twelve-month wait, we thought that would give us plenty of time to sell our Gold Coast unit and business and buy a 4WD.

Little did we know it would actually take 19 months due to all the shortages, especially the chassis. Apparently, there are only a handful of chassis builders in Australia. Plus there were shortages of raw materials.

Why did it take us 7 months to buy a caravan? Research! I initially researched brands that made a centre ensuite (not that we ended up buying one!). Then the quality of the brands according to their owners.

I joined caravan and camping groups on Facebook and read all I could about off-road caravans including Urban Caravan reviews. I also started to understand and research the impact of weights when towing a caravan. Down the rabbit hole I went. For each new thing I learnt about caravans, I measured against Urban Caravans and their quality. They passed every time.

Fast forward to the show and we’d narrowed it down (or Kev did as I already knew the caravan I’d like) between a New Age caravan and Urban. Urban came out on top again with the New Age van weighing 300kgs heavier for the same layout.

Urban Caravans Quality

Our first night in our Urban Caravans X-Terrain

By quality, we mean the materials used and the finish of the caravan overall, such as:

  • A tig-welded (tungsten inert gas) fully aluminium frame that is lock bolted for off-road and strength
  • A Z-channel chassis allows the aluminium frame to sit on the sides of the chassis and to be bolted directly to the chassis, not sitting on top
  • A rot-free frame as there is no timber
  • The caravan furniture is assembled using basic tongue and groove on all joins, followed by the three-part process of glueing, screwing and sealing
  • The famous Urban 10-year structural transferrable warranty

Urban Caravans Review – X-Terrain

Although we chose an X-Terrain we were looking at the Urban Xtreme Caravan. Both off-road caravan models offered the same layouts. The Urban X-treme caravan has a few extras such as brush bars and under-body armour.

We did spec up our X-Terrain, though, adding extra solar, lithium batteries, an inverter and many other extras you will see on our walkaround YouTube video (coming soon!). We found it a cost-effective way to buy an off-road caravan.

The X-Terrain has an independent trailing arm suspension, which can handle up to 4.5T of weight. Additionally, the shocks are designed to absorb impact and protect the vehicle from bumps and vibrations. The X-Terrain range comes standard with a DO35 hitch, which limits the ATM to 3.5T. However, you can upgrade to 4.5T by changing out the hitch to a DO45 hitch and changing the safety chains.

Are We Happy With Our Urban Van?

Ettamogah Pub

Yes we are!

Due to our Y62 Patrol catching fire, we were without a tow vehicle for a few months waiting for our insurance claim and our new 4WD to arrive. Although we took delivery of our van in late October, we couldn’t use it! We couldn’t even stay our 2 complementary nights at a local caravan park to get to know our van.

We had a holiday planned for Christmas and really wanted to take the van to Victoria. The car gods lined up and our new car arrived 10 days before we were due to head off to Victoria. Our Christmas trip turned into our shakedown trip.

We drove from the Gold Coast to Bendigo and return, around 3,000 km. The three weeks away gave us time to look over and experience the van. We were off-grid all but one night. The 39c day was humid and hot so we opted to go into our first caravan park and plug into power so we could crank the air conditioner. This was only due to the faulty fans that didn’t work, (they are being replaced under warranty).

On the trip, we also learnt what psi to run the airbags at for both the car airbags and the van’s airbags. Also, how to pull the awning in and out easily and smoothly and all about our Nature’s Head composting toilet.

Now we are on the road full-time travelling around Australia. We’ve given the van a considerable workout with a trip to Cape York and back. Would we buy an Urban Caravans X-Terrain again? We definitely would as the build quality for the price is outstanding.

Urban Caravan FAQs

There are a few FAQs that are commonly asked. We cover them below.

Where Are Urban Caravans Made?

Urban Caravans Epping, Victoria.

Is There An Urban Caravans Owners Group?

Yes, a combined Australian and New Zealand owners group is on Facebook. You can find the group here.

What Urban Caravan Problems Are There?

Like all caravan manufacturers, there are always minor problems that can either develop or are evident on handover. For example, the latch on our ensuite door and door were damaged in transit, pre-delivery. And a few of our soft-closing drawers didn’t close properly. To my knowledge, no significant problems with owning an Urban have been reported.

Urban Caravans Prices

Like almost everything else in the world, caravan prices have risen since 2020 with Urban Caravans being no exception. We were fortunate to avoid the latest prices by placing our order in 2021.

The price had risen slightly at the time of signing our contract from the first time we saw the Urban vans at the first caravan and camping show I mentioned above. At the time of writing the price for the same caravan is 40K more.

You can refer to your local dealer for the current pricing.

There are more second-hand Urban Caravans for sale now (Jan 2025). The best place to look is the Urban Facebook group mentioned above or a specialised caravan for sale website.

  1. Awesome & very informative. I will certainly look into the Urban vans. More than likely I will be going with a van instead of a Motorhome, your lay out preferences of a Cvan were just like mine 🤣 let’s see what I end up with 🤔🤗

  2. I believe the only retailer in Victoria selling Urban Caravans is The Touring Hub, located at 412 Cooper Street, Epping VIC 3076.

Good review – looking forward to picking up my van later this year.

  4. Great article. We just picked up our customised 21 foot Tungsten Tough in December. It has many of the features that you’ve described. Just wondering what weigh your van is and what air conditioning system is installed? Our van has a TARE of 3000kg. We were expected 2700kg and is perhaps the only thing that we are disappointed about. Our Ibis 4 air conditioner has struggles to cool a can this size. It’s strange how the Ibis only how 2 outlets and that you can’t adjust the vents down. I agree, that these vans are amongst the best on the market. Thanks for the article.

    • You are welcome!
Our Tare is 2800. We have the same air con. We agree it’s weird how the vents can’t adjust down, but I guess heat rises and that is perhaps the reason.
