Our Involvement in The Brighter Side TV Program
The company Source Bottle is a go-between for journalists and expert sources. I answered a journalist call last August, and the initial interview took place over Zoom when we were heading back from our Cape York Trip.
I remember the August day clearly. We arrived at Musgrave Roadhouse mid-afternoon. Kev quickly set up Starlink, and I prepared for the interview. It was 35 degrees, and we were camped off-grid!
The actual filming didn’t take place until we reached the Gold Coast in February.
Once I knew who was interviewing me (Neralda Jacobs from Channel 10), I went against what I normally do (research). I didn’t want to know in case of overwhelm, so I took the head-in-the-sand approach instead.
On the day of the interview, I thought I’d be all kinds of nervous, but surprisingly, I wasn’t. Maybe my head-in-the-sand approach worked!
This approach did backfire a little, though. I asked Narelda how long she had been a journalist and found out it was 25 years!
Behind-the-Scenes of Filming for The Brighter Side TV Program
We didn’t think our
Kev and I were surprised at how many people were on the team to film the show. We counted 8 people, including the producer, director, sound guy, two cameramen, a hair and makeup lady and a goffer. And, of course, the journalist, Narelda.
Speaking of makeup, we both had to have makeup and powder on our faces. This was to prevent the shine for filming.
All the crew were very helpful and friendly, especially Neralda. She explained what the crew was doing every step of the way. I’m sure Narelda’s approach helped me relax and follow her lead.
The producer and director also shared their insights, explaining what a particular segment covered, where to stand and what to do.
Our Segment on Episode 6
Our segment was filmed in the beautiful Currumbin Valley in the Gold Coast Hinterland. We have been asked several times; however, we can’t divulge the exact location as camping is not permitted.
The film crew had applied to the Gold Coast city council for a licence and permit to film there for the morning. Surprisingly, a council representative also joined us on set initially to check that we were filming.
The social media team from Comm Bank were also at the shoot. Here are a few tips shot on the day for Comm Bank.
I showed Neralda inside our
These are a few of the tips I shared in episode 6
- Do your research
- Know how you want to travel and design or buy your van or secondhand van to suit you and your family.
- How All Around Oz is about helping people just like you with researching and planning a big lap of Australia.
- Neralda and I also discussed the costs of living on the road compared to living in a house or suburbia and which is cheaper.
- And what to do if you are feeling overwhelmed with planning your big lap.
We loved filming for The Brighter Side. It was a lot of fun; our friends and family loved it, too. They thought it was particularly funny that Kev was called a Jones. He’s a Walsh and proud of it!
