This quaint town, home to around 600 people, combines modern attractions and nostalgia for the 1930s. The town has something special to offer caravanners and campers.
Although we have visited the neighbouring towns of Maleny, Montville, and Imbil several times, we have never visited and stayed in Kenilworth.

We loved our two-week stay in the Kenilworth area. It is a great little town to escape the school holidays and the hecticness on the Sunny Coast.

Kenilworth is a town on the banks of the Mary River, about 50 minutes from the coast and 1.5 hours north of Brisbane. From Maleny, this river meanders north, through Conondale, Kenilworth, Gympie, Tiaro, and Maryborough before emptying into the sea across Fraser Island.
If you’re wondering what to do in Kenilworth, it is a tiny town with many attractions, such as an art gallery, artisan stores, a historical museum, and a famous ice cream, cheese, and yoghurt factory.
Adjacent to the town, the Conondale State Forest offers hiking, horseback riding, and fishing. From rustic camping to opulent retreats, Kenilworth offers a variety of lodging choices to suit the tastes of any visitor.

The Kenilworth Tourist Information Centre is your first stop to learn what to do in Kenilworth, QLD.
Its convenient location in the heart of town makes it easily accessible. The centre is staffed by enthusiastic volunteers. Get maps and advice on the best hikes based on your fitness level. This is your go-to guide if you intend to explore the region on foot.
Explore the Kenilworth Community Craft Shop located behind the Information Centre. Local artisans sell their handcrafted items here, making it an excellent place to find one-of-a-kind souvenirs. Don’t miss the lovingly made tea towels, soft toys, and cushion covers.
2. Kenilworth Dairies (Cheese Factory Kenilworth)
Start your adventure in Kenilworth by going to the Cheese Factory. Situated at the southern tip of the town, this family-owned business provides a selection of cheeses, yoghurts, and other foods.
The Kenilworth Cheese Factory has an interesting history. It was initially established in 1950 by the Kraft Corporation to manufacture bulk cheese. The factory was closed in the 1980s, leaving many locals unemployed.
With the support of a local businessman, several of the employees then purchased the factory and re-opened it in September 1990 as Kenilworth Country Foods. Recently, a local dairying family purchased the factory and rebranded as Kenilworth Dairies.
The dedicated retail area is filled with delicious dairy products. For a fun-tasting experience, consider picking up a boxed cheese-tasting platter and heading over to the picturesque Town Park on the other side of the street. Their killer chocolate mousse is a local favourite and not to be missed.
My favourite, though, is the mint chocolate mousse. It is a beautiful light and creamy mousse that is available in both a 1-serving size and a 500g size and is very Moorish. As tempting as the 500g tub was, I’m sure my waistline is grateful I stuck to the smaller tub.
3. The Old Bakery Kenilworth
The aroma of freshly baked treats beckons from the Kenilworth Country Bakery, which is located just across the street from the Cheese Factory.
The bakery, which is well-known for its doughnuts, has grown over the years. Savour a delicious treat, and if you’re up for the challenge, try the bakery’s renowned one-kilo doughnut challenge and the one-kilo sausage roll challenge.
4. Walks Around Kenilworth
After you’ve enjoyed the town’s delectable treats, consider walks in Kenilworth to enjoy the surrounding natural beauty. Take a country drive to immerse yourself in the lush countryside with farmland and dense rainforest.
If you have a high clearance 4WD, head to Bouloumba Falls in Conondale National Park for a more difficult but rewarding adventure.
For a stroll, visit Yabba Creek Park’s Fig Tree Walk. This walk, which takes you along a mossy boardwalk through a lush rainforest, introduces you to two massive fig trees. Look for wallabies, echidnas, and other wildlife along the way.
5. Fishing Mary River Kenilworth
As the Mary River flows through Kenilworth, fishers can cast a line and relax by the water. Whether you’re a seasoned angler or a beginner, the Mary River provides a serene environment for a day of fishing.
Pack a picnic, find a quiet area along the riverbank, and enjoy the peace and solitude.
Please be aware that there is a closed season from August to October. This is to protect the breeding season for the endangered Mary Valley cod.

These markets take place in Town Park and feature pottery, homemade soaps, gift cards, gourmet snacks, and potted plants. Engage with sellers in the community recreational space, and you might find a great souvenir to remember your trip by!
7. Kenilworth Historical Museum
Step back in time and discover Kenilworth’s rich history at the Kenilworth Historical Museum.
This museum, located on Alexandra Street, tells the story of the town’s founding in the 1920s, which was fueled by sheep and dairy farming in the Mary Valley.
It is open on Sundays during the cooler months and provides an intriguing glimpse into Kenilworth’s pioneering era.
8. Kenilworth Swimming Pool
If you want to cool down on a hot day, visit the Kenilworth Swimming Pool for a refreshing dip. The swimming pool provides a welcome respite for travelling with family or friends. There is a small entry fee of

Yabba Creek Park, located just a ten-minute drive from Kenilworth on Eumundi Kenilworth Road, offers the delightful Fig Tree Walk. This refreshing rainforest trail leads to two mammoth fig trees along a mossy boardwalk.

Things To Do: You can walk or ride horses through eucalypt and pine forests along rugged creeks and cliff faces. There are also pristine watering holes perfect for relaxation and fishing.
15. Imbil State Forest (The Little Yabba Creek Circuit)
The Little Yabba Creek circuit is located in the Imbil State Forest and is accessible by two-wheel drive vehicles.
Things to Do: Enjoy a 45-minute walk along the circuit, starting and finishing at the Charlie Moreland day-use area. The trail leads to swimming spots along the beautiful Little Yabba Creek.

- Kenilworth Homestead: This historic riverside retreat surrounded by picturesque landscapes offers diverse accommodation options, from camping to cabins. We camped at the showgrounds for our first week in Kenilworth.
- Imbil Camping Retreat: A tranquil camping haven by the river, providing a peaceful escape
- Charlie Moreland Camping Ground (Imbil State Forest): this camping ground offers a true bush camping experience with scenic trails and Little Yabba Creek nearby.
