History of Childers
Childers was founded in the 1850s as a small farm town with cattle and sugar cane. Over the years, it’s become a tourist destination with history, heritage and modern attractions.
For those who regularly watch the news, you’ll remember the tragic arson attack in 2000, when the backpackers’ hotel caught fire, resulting in the unfortunate death of 15 backpackers with many others injured.
The backpackers had come from various countries, adding to the international impact of the tragedy. The terrorist attack was later found to have been committed by a British man, Robert Paul Long, who was taking revenge for having been evicted earlier.
Childers became infamous after the attack. But despite the tragic incident, the town has managed to recover and rebuild.
The site of the arson attack has been transformed into a memorial, art gallery, and visitor information centre. The community has turned a tragic event into an opportunity for remembrance, reflection, and a positive space transformation.
