Choosing a fridge was one of the decisions we made during the build of our caravan. A Dometic fridge was included as standard, but because we knew we’d be travelling full-time, we upgraded to the larger 274L Thetford compressor fridge.
I’m very glad we did. When you’re living in your caravan rather than using it for weekends and holidays, fridge and freezer space becomes much more important. We’ve used our Thetford while travelling around Australia, including free camping and temperatures around 39°C, and it has kept everything cold whether we’ve been parked up or travelling.
But the best 12V upright fridge isn’t necessarily the biggest one you can fit. The right choice depends on where you’re installing it, how much food and frozen storage you need, your available payload and, importantly, the battery and solar setup you have to run it.
There’s also a big difference between choosing a full-size upright fridge for a caravan and a smaller upright fridge for a 4WD canopy, camper or compact setup. In this guide I’ve compared both, so you can narrow the options down based on how you’ll actually use the fridge.

We upgraded to the 274L Thetford compressor fridge when our caravan was built and have used it while travelling full-time around Australia.
The large 202L fridge and 72L freezer suit the way we live on the road, and ours has performed reliably while free camping and in temperatures around 39°C.
The Bushman DC130-X is a strong option for caravans, campers and off-grid setups where you want useful fridge capacity without the size and weight of a full-height caravan fridge.
The current Heavy Duty model uses a Secop Danfoss compressor, has a 43°C tropical rating and a seven-year compressor warranty.

When a 12V Upright Fridge Actually Makes Sense
A 12V upright fridge makes sense when you want the convenience and organisation of a home-style fridge in a caravan, camper, motorhome or permanent 4WD setup.
For long-term travel, front-opening shelves and door storage make food much easier to organise than a chest-style fridge. Larger upright models also give you considerably more fridge and freezer capacity, which can be useful when travelling longer distances between supermarkets.
Smaller upright fridges can work particularly well in 4WD canopies and compact campers because they make use of vertical space while keeping food and drinks easy to access.
The important consideration is your power system. A compressor fridge needs a battery and charging setup capable of supporting its actual consumption, particularly during hot weather or extended periods of cloud when solar input may be reduced.
For occasional trips or a setup where portability matters, a chest-style camping fridge may still be the better option. But for a permanently installed touring setup, an upright fridge can make day-to-day food storage considerably easier.

How to Choose the Best 12v Upright Fridge
Choose the Fridge for the Installation
Start with where the fridge is going to live. A full-height 200L-plus caravan fridge and an 80–130L canopy fridge solve very different problems, even though both are described as upright fridges.
Measure the available height, width and depth carefully and check the manufacturer’s installation dimensions rather than just the external fridge dimensions. Allow for the door, handles, wiring and any ventilation clearance required by the manufacturer.
If you are replacing an existing caravan fridge, also check whether the new fridge will physically fit through the caravan door before installation.
Capacity and Freezer Space
Think about how much food you normally carry and how long you travel between supermarkets.
For us, moving to the 274L Thetford was worthwhile because we live in our caravan full-time and wanted plenty of fridge and freezer space. Someone using a 4WD canopy or smaller camper may be much better served by an 80–130L upright.
Look at the split between fridge and freezer capacity as well as the total litres. Two fridges with similar overall capacities can provide very different amounts of freezer space.
Weight and Payload
The fridge contributes to the payload of your caravan or vehicle, so check its actual weight before buying.
A large upright fridge can weigh considerably more than a compact model, and that weight increases again once it is loaded with food and drinks.
Don’t choose a fridge on capacity alone if your caravan or vehicle is already close to its payload limit.
Power and Your Off-Grid Setup
Don’t buy a 12V compressor fridge without considering the electrical system that will run it.
Battery capacity, solar input, charging from the tow vehicle, ambient temperature and your other electrical loads all affect how long you can remain off-grid.
Manufacturer power-consumption figures are useful for comparing models, but they are not a guarantee of what your fridge will use in your setup. Hot weather, ventilation, temperature settings and how often you open the door can all affect consumption.
Compressor vs 3-Way Absorption Fridges
One of the biggest decisions when choosing a caravan fridge is whether you want a compressor or absorption model.
A compressor fridge uses a refrigeration compressor, much like a household fridge. Depending on the model, it may run from 12/24V DC only or include the ability to operate from AC power as well. Do not assume every compressor fridge is automatically a “2-way” 12V/240V fridge – check the power sources specified for the individual model.
Compressor fridges are increasingly common in caravans with lithium batteries, solar and suitable charging systems because they can deliver strong cooling performance without relying on LPG.
A 3-way absorption fridge can operate from LPG, 240V AC or 12V DC. Its major advantage for off-grid camping is the ability to run for extended periods on gas without drawing heavily from the caravan battery.
However, absorption fridges have different installation and ventilation requirements and their performance can be more sensitive to ambient temperature and how level the caravan is.
Neither system is automatically right for everyone. If you have a capable battery and solar setup, a compressor fridge can be an excellent option for long-term touring. If gas operation is important to the way you camp, a current 3-way fridge such as the Thetford N4208 remains an option.
How Much Power Does a 12V Upright Fridge Use?
Power consumption varies considerably between upright fridges, so there isn’t one figure that applies to every model.
Fridge size, compressor efficiency, ambient temperature, ventilation, temperature settings and how often you open the door all affect consumption.
As a real example, Thetford currently rates our 274L T1274E at 32.5Ah per 24 hours at 16°C ambient and 70.8Ah per 24 hours at 32°C, with a stated average of 51.7Ah per 24 hours. That difference shows why planning your electrical system around ideal-condition figures can leave you short during hot Australian weather.
When sizing batteries and solar, use the manufacturer’s figures for the exact fridge you’re considering and allow capacity for your other electrical loads as well.
Good installation matters too. Follow the manufacturer’s ventilation instructions so the refrigeration system can remove heat efficiently.

Thetford T1274E 274L Compressor Fridge Review
The Thetford T1274E 274L is the fridge we chose when our caravan was built. A Dometic fridge was included in the original specification, but because we knew we’d be living and travelling in the caravan full-time, we decided to upgrade to the larger Thetford.
I’m glad we did. Caravan fridge space becomes much more important when you’re living on the road rather than packing for a weekend away, and the 202L fridge plus 72L freezer gives us plenty of room for the way we travel.
We’ve used ours while connected to power and while free camping, and we’ve travelled with it in temperatures around 39°C. It has continued to keep our food cold and frozen food frozen whether we’ve been parked up or on the road.
The T1274E runs on 12V DC and doesn’t require external fridge vents, which can simplify installation compared with some traditional caravan fridges. It also has separate temperature regulation for the fridge and freezer compartments plus day and night operating modes.
For a smaller caravan or occasional touring, 274L may be more fridge than you need. But for our full-time setup, I’d choose the larger fridge again.

That doesn’t mean I’d recommend a 274L fridge for everyone. For a smaller caravan, camper or 4WD canopy, I’d look at models such as the Bushman DC130-X, Engel ST90 or Dometic NRX range rather than carrying the size and weight of a full-height caravan fridge.
If LPG operation is important to your off-grid setup, a current 3-way model such as the Thetford N4208 is still worth considering.
The important thing is to choose the fridge around your particular setup. Check the available installation space, fridge and freezer capacity, weight, power consumption, ventilation requirements and the battery and charging system that will run it.
