How to Organise your Camp Kitchen is something that I think we all struggle with initially. No matter how you choose to travel, you will at some stage need to eat.

Whether you are in a tent, a camper trailer, caravan or staying in cabin accommodation, you will need to think about eating and cooking. For campers, being able to cook a meal means that you have to take everything you will need with you.

Even if you are staying somewhere that has a camp kitchen you can’t be guaranteed that all the equipment you want will be available. You also can’t guarantee that the kitchen and equipment will be clean enough to use! When we were purchasing our camper trailer, it was up to me to decide what type of a kitchen set up I wanted. I opted for a tailgate style kitchen as opposed to a slide out kitchen as I thought it would take up less room.

STORAGE MADE EASY

One of the hardest things to do when packing for a trip, is knowing what to take and what not to take. Then you have to get it all to fit in.  It took us a couple of trips to get this sorted. But in the last four years, the way we pack and store our kitchen stuff hasn’t changed.  You want everything to fit in nice and snug so nothing is sliding around.

For our set-up, finding a rectangle bucket that fitted in the gap under the washtub was the easiest way to hold everything firmly in place. Sitting next to that is a plastic container that has all our cutlery in it.  Using a container with a tight-fitting lid keeps dust and crawlies out as well.

The bottom drawer has our dinner plates and bowls in it.  Placing sheets of rubber matting in the bottom of your drawers and between plates will help stop things sliding around.

TUBS OR DRAWERS

The best purchase we ever made was this set of four plastic drawers.  They are quite heavy duty and when we are travelling they sit one set behind the other. When we have the kitchen open we slide them forward and sit them side by side. In these, we store our food, and larger cooking utensils, as well as things like tissues and toilet paper. They really are a great way to organise your camp kitchen.

These plastic storage drawers are ideal for storing our food and cooking utensils. They are sturdy and seal quite well.

Whatever you decide to use for storage in your camp kitchen, make sure that they can be sealed shut.  This will keep dust, insects and the occasional possum or bird out of your food.  Not sure what to include in your camp kitchen?

    • Hi Bianca….I’ve had a look on the drawers and can’t see any brand on them. All I can tell you is they were purchased from Big W about 6 years ago. They are a heavy duty plastic and have never cracked or warped.
