On our travels, we have seen some magic spots but have always had an issue with being able to accurately share their locations. With the new “What3Words” app, our location sharing problems are over. Oh and did I mention it’s free to download and use?
What is “What3Words”
What3words is a coordinates app that is as accurate as the conventional longitude and latitude measurements, but a lot easier to use. The app is available for both Apple and Android. Every 3m x 3m section of the world has been given a unique 3 word code.
For example, you could type “farewells.compulsive.traps” into the 3 words app. The app would then show you the turn off to see this “AMAZING” sculpture. It is only a dirt track that would be easily missed without What3Words.
What about the absolute best views of the Murray River, you need “participant.landing.campfires”.
We have all had the misdirection from location services where the pointer is no where near the actual location that you would like to be. You make a right turn as the location marker says, only to find that you should have turned left. With “what3words”, this will be a thing of the past. The “3” words will get you to within 3 meters of where you need to be.
How we will use “What3Words”
Being able to give a very accurate location for those “in the middle of nowhere places” will be invaluable. Wherever we find something that we should share, there will be a what3word location attached. That out of the way swimming hole. The free camp next to the river by a black stump. An historical site on a walking track.
When you have read about that perfect free camp, but the address means nothing. What3words will have you within a couple of meters of what we are talking about.
Some What3Word examples:
The turn west for Carnarvon Gorge in Qld between Roma and Rolleston is ///haste.collapsed.grove
If you want to see the Balancing Rock between Glen Innes and Glencoe on the New England Highway then you need this, ///roadblock.prepared.swivel
What about the Silo Art in Grenfell, NSW. The entrance is at, ///greased.ruby.mister

Many business’s are taking on this form of location registering for precise deliveries. Even some emergency services are using What3Words. The precise location of that “in the middle of nowhere” accident, would be super easy to find. The rescue helicopter would have an absolutely precise spot for that bushwalker with a broken leg.
