Whenever we are planning a trip somewhere new, I like to keep my eye open for some different places to stay. Just prior to our recent trip I stumbled across Nakadoo Farm Stay and knew I was on a winner.

Nakadoo Farm Stay
Nakadoo is an awesome spot to camp at or visit for a day.

NAKADOO

Located just on the outskirts of Coonamble in western New South Wales, Nakadoo is a working farm. Owned by Karren and Peter Kennedy (better known as Naka), Nakadoo is the perfect spot to stay a night or two if you are travelling around that way. Best of all it’s completely FREE!

Whether you have a tent, camper trailer or caravan you are welcome at Nakadoo. Karren has worked hard to maintain an area of green grass for you to set up on. Close by there is a fire pit that is just ready to take your camp oven. Rough timber log benches around the fire pit and an assortment of old farm equipment add to the atmosphere. It makes you feel like you are in a bush camp in the middle of nowhere.

Right away Karren and Naka made us feel so welcome. Karren even came over and lit the fire for us whilst we were setting up the camp trailer.

A spacious shower and toilet is also available for guests to use. It is wheelchair friendly, was very clean and there was loads of hot water too!

FARMYARD ANIMALS

Nakadoo is home to an assortment of animals. I was surprised to see a number of free-range guinea pigs and rabbits running around. There were also chooks and geese, a goat and kid, a llama, sheep, calves and a couple of dogs, including Rip the Chihuahua, who I took a shine to!

Calves, sheep, goats and a llama all live in happy harmony at Nakadoo.

There were also a few horses and a donkey in the yards and paddock behind the camp area.

Nakadoo also runs horse-drawn wagon tours. So some of the horses are draft horses. These tours are generally seasonal and bookings are required. We didn’t get to do a tour but Naka did bring one of his horses in for me to meet. ‘Lucky’ is a Shire draft horse and is a very impressive-looking animal.

I may have fallen just a little bit in love with ‘Lucky’ who is a Shire draft horse.

If you think you might be interested in doing a horse-drawn tour, make sure you get in touch prior to your arrival to see if it can be arranged.

THE SHED

‘The Shed’ at Nakadoo is both a museum and a tribute to early rural life in the Coonamble district. There are some wonderful pieces to be found in The Shed and Karren can tell you the story of them all. From early shearing handpieces, horse-drawn buggies, hand tools and household items, there is lots to look at.

Included in this display is part of an old homestead that was going to be demolished. The homestead dated back to the early 1900s and the materials used to build the home had never been on motorised transport. So Naka bought all the pieces back to Nakadoo on a horse-drawn wagon. The roofing iron was used to line the inside of the shed, whilst windows and part of the walls were put on display.

If you would like to do a tour of The Shed entry is just $10.00

A tour through The Shed Museum at Nakadoo is like stepping back in time.

We loved our stay at Nakadoo. We really enjoyed being able to cook and relax around the campfire. Nakadoo would be a perfect spot for anyone who wants to learn about country life or who just wants a peaceful spot to stay a night or two.
