One of the biggest expenses that you will encounter when travelling is food. We do love a good pie and will sometimes treat ourselves, but this can be a really expensive exercise if you do it frequently. Upwards of $40 in some places. A great way to save money on food when travelling is to pack your own lunch stuff. That way you can stop anywhere you like for a quick bite to eat without any major expense. And let me tell you there are some fabulous spots to stop for a quick road trip lunch!

Here are five of our favourite road trip lunch spots.

TOOLOOM FALLS, NSW

Tooloom Falls is a camp area located just south of Urbenville in northern NSW. It is also an ideal spot to stop for a quick lunch break. There are plenty of picnic tables and fires are allowed. As an added bonus you have the beautiful Tooloom Falls to admire, whilst you eat your lunch.

GEEHI FLATS, NSW

Geehi Flats Rest Area is located within the Kosciuszko National Park in the Snowy Mountains region of NSW.  A very popular camp ground in summer, there are picnic tables, toilets and a river. The last time we were there it was about 40` so we were able to cool off in the river as well. There are also plenty of shady trees for you to park under.

BRAIDWOOD, NSW

Braidwood is a small town located approximately halfway between Canberra and Batemans Bay. Known for it’s beautiful historic buildings, it is also the ideal spot to stop for lunch as it has a huge park in the centre of town. With loads of shady trees, a great kids play ground plus picnic tables and toilets it makes for a great lunch stop. If you are travelling with kids they can run around and burn off some excess energy before jumping back into the car.

SEVERN RIVER, ASHFORD

The Severn River Rest Area is a favourite of Brenden’s when he is in the truck. A free camp right on the edge of the Severn River and just four kilometres from the small town of Ashford it is a great little spot for lunch. There is a picnic table, wood BBQ’s, a long drop toilet, plenty of shade and open space. It is unusual to find it empty and is the perfect spot for a quiet weekend away. The only downside that I could see on our last stop there was that the area did need mowing.

WALLUM RESERVE, QLD

Wallum Reserve is located about half way between Childers and Bundaberg and is another favourite spot of Brenden’s. It is a nice open camp area so it is easy to get into if you are towing a van or trailer. Once again there is plenty of shade, picnic tables, water and toilets.
