But first…
Who or What is Solidtecknics Australia?
Solidteknics is an Australian cookware company known for producing innovative, high-quality, and durable cookware. The company prides itself on creating multi-generational durable cookware. This means that its products can be passed down through generations, rather than contributing to landfill like so many of the disposable modern products.
A few notable features of Solidteknics cookware include:
One-Piece Design
Unlike many other brands that have handles attached to the main body with rivets or screws, Solidteknics cookware is forged from a single piece of metal. This seamless construction means there are no weak points where the handle might detach, and there are no rivets where food residues can accumulate. Which makes it strong, durable, hygienic and easy to clean.
Multi-Century Warranty
Committed to sustainability and durability, Solidteknics offers a warranty that speaks to their confidence in the product’s longevity. They believe that their cookware can last multiple lifetimes if properly cared for.
Sustainable and Ethical Production
Solidteknics emphasises producing its products in a manner that is both environmentally friendly and ethical. They source their materials responsibly and focus on reducing waste in the production process.
Innovation
The company is known for its innovative designs and engineering solutions that address common issues found in traditional cookware.
Solidteknics has gained recognition for creating new and unique designs in cookware. These aren’t just for the sake of looking pretty or being different, but they’re engineered—carefully planned and built—to solve problems that people often encounter with regular, old-school cookware.
The idea is that they’re not just making cookware that’s “nice” or “high-quality,” but that they’re specifically targeting and resolving issues that have bugged people for a long time.
In a nutshell, they’re using clever design and solid engineering to make your cooking life easier and more efficient. And given your interest in travel and outdoor cooking, these types of innovations could be a real game-changer!
Loved By Chefs and Cooks Australia Wide
Solidteknics has gained significant recognition and a loyal following among chefs, home cooks, and sustainability supporters for its commitment to quality, durability, and ethical production practices.
Types of Solidteknics Cookware
Solidtecknics have two types of cookware in their range. nöni™cookware and Aus-Ion cookware.
nöni™ Cookware
nöni™ cookware is proudly made in Australia and is a ground-breaking innovation in cookware. nöni™ is crafted from ferritic stainless steel, known for its superior conductivity and absence of nickel. This unique material is specially procured for Solidteknics from Germany, given Australia’s current lack of stainless-steel production.
Distinct from typical stainless-steel utensils, nöni™ cookware stands out with its absence of heavy metals, layered cladding, or artificial coatings. These pans are crafted as a solid single piece, devoid of any joins, screws, or rivets. Not only do they promise exceptional conductivity, but they’re also designed to cook for multiple generations.
Aus-Ion Cookware
Solidteknics Aus-Ion cookware range is made from wrought iron, rather than cast iron. The company chooses wrought iron over cast iron for these reasons;
Wrought Iron
- Wrought iron is more flexible due to the iron being mechanically worked
- Due to this process, it never breaks or cracks even if it’s dropped or overheated
- Ergonomic long handles that stay cool
- Uses heat more efficiently
- Superior conductivity
- Heats faster
- Half the weight
- Free from heavy metals and made from 99.7% clean Australian iron
The Difference Between Wrought Iron and Cast Iron
The terms “cast iron” and “wrought iron” refer to different types of iron alloys and manufacturing processes, and each has its own distinct properties and applications, especially in cookware.
Cast Iron Process
When made offshore, most cast iron is known to contain heavy metals as cast iron cookware is made from recycled steel containing heavy metals. Studies show that heavy metals can leach into and contaminate food which can have negative health implications.
Composition: Generally, cast iron contains 2-4% carbon along with traces of silicon, manganese, and other elements.
Manufacturing: It is made by melting the iron and then pouring it into moulds. This casting process gives it its name.
Properties: Cast iron retains heat exceptionally well, which makes it ideal for slow cooking and frying. However, it’s prone to rust and needs regular seasoning to maintain a non-stick surface.
Cookware Use: It’s commonly used for skillets, Dutch ovens, and griddles.
Wrought Iron Process
Composition: Wrought iron contains less carbon (less than 0.08%) compared to cast iron, making it purer and closer to elemental iron.
Manufacturing: The term “wrought” literally means “worked,” and this type of iron is traditionally hammered, rolled, or otherwise worked into shape. It is not cast.
Properties: Wrought iron is more ductile, malleable, and resistant to corrosion than cast iron.
Cookware Use: Because of its properties, wrought iron is often used for thinner, lighter cookware that heats up and cools down quickly. Solidteknics uses wrought iron for frying pans and skillets designed for quick and healthy cooking.
nöni™ Solidteknics Review 10L Deepa Pot and Bigga Skillet – The Ultimate Camp Oven
This Solidteknics nöni™ cookware set hits the caravanners brief of an item having to have more than one use.
At first glance, the nöni™10L Deepa Pot and 35cm Bigga Skillet Set is a large camp oven or Dutch oven. However, the weight of the 10L Deepa Pot and skillet are surprisingly light for a large piece of cookware. Both weigh in at only 6.5kg – 3.6 kg for the Deepa Pot and 2.9kg for the skillet, making the set lighter than most traditional camp ovens.
Although our Deepa set will mainly be used on our campfire it is also versatile and can be used on our induction plate, gas outdoor kitchen, in an oven, on an electric stove or over halogen.
I love that we can use the skillet separately as a stand-alone piece of cookware to cook a steak, a pan of Bolognese or other wet dishes.
The Deepa Pot set also doubles as a fantastic pot for cooking Muddies (when Kev catches them!) and is also great for slow cooking.
The skillet makes a great pan for paella or a stir-fry pan in place of a wok.
