When you live and travel on the road full-time, your gear quickly proves whether it’s genuinely practical or just good on paper. Comfort, durability, packability and versatility matter far more than flashy features or marketing claims.
This real-world The North Face gear review is based on extended use across hiking in regional Western Australia, everyday travel, and international flights.
I tested three pieces of gear I actually travelled with: The North Face Offtrail GORE-TEX hiking shoes, the Women’s puffer vest, and the Jester backpack.
Rather than a glossy product summary, this review focuses on how each item performed in real conditions, what stood out, what could be improved, and who each piece of gear realistically suits.
The North Face Gear Review – Offtrail GORE-TEX Shoes
I wore the Offtrail GORE-TEX shoes extensively while travelling across The Nullabor and hiking through the Wheatbelt in Western Australia, and they quickly became my go-to winter shoes.
Straight out of the box, they were comfortable with no break-in period needed, which is a big plus when you’re living on the road and walking most days. They felt supportive from day one, with excellent ankle stability, even on uneven trails and loose surfaces.
Grip has been a standout. I’ve worn them on wet rock, sand, loose stones and bush trails, and they’ve consistently felt planted and secure underfoot. Despite the support, they still felt lightweight, making them easy to wear all day without that heavy boot feeling.
The waterproofing genuinely delivered. On one hike to photograph one of the Giants, I was able to wade through shallow water to get the shot and my feet stayed completely dry. In winter conditions they also kept my feet warm without overheating.
I had no rubbing, pressure points or comfort issues at all, even with extended wear over multiple days. One thing I really liked is how versatile they were. I could wear them just as easily with jeans or shorts for everyday travel as I could on the trail.
What stood out
- Immediate comfort with no break-in required
- Excellent grip across mixed terrain including wet surfaces
- Strong ankle support and stability
- Lightweight and comfortable for all-day wear
- Reliable waterproof protection
- Warm enough for winter conditions
- Versatile enough for hiking and everyday travel
Would I choose them again?
Yes. The comfort, lightweight feel and versatility made them an easy everyday shoe as well as a reliable hiking option.
Who they’re best for
Travellers and hikers who want one pair of shoes that can handle day hikes, mixed terrain and everyday wear during cooler months, without needing to swap between trail shoes and casual footwear.
Overall verdict
A genuinely comfortable, lightweight and practical hiking shoe that performed well across real Australian travel conditions.
The North Face Women’s Puffer Vest
I’ve been wearing the Women’s Puffer Vest most days whenever the weather allowed for long sleeves, particularly for morning walks, cooler days, windy conditions and general day-to-day travel.
It strikes a great balance between warmth and bulk. It’s genuinely cosy and warm without feeling heavy or restrictive, which makes it easy to wear for long periods rather than constantly taking it on and off like a bulky jacket.
Layering has been easy. I mainly wore it over base layers, but it also works well as an extra warmth layer if needed. It gives you flexibility depending on how the temperature shifts throughout the day.
Wind protection has been excellent, which surprised me for a vest. It cuts the chill well on breezy mornings and exposed walks, making it far more practical than a lightweight jumper or fleece alone.
From a travel perspective, packability is a big win. It’s lightweight and squashes down into a small pack, so it’s easy to throw into a daypack or keep handy in the caravan without taking up much space.
Comfort and movement are excellent. It doesn’t restrict your arms or shoulders and feels easy to walk, hike and move in all day.
I didn’t experience any downsides with this vest during use.
What stood out
- Warm and cosy without bulk
- Excellent wind protection
- Lightweight and very packable
- Comfortable with great freedom of movement
- Easy to layer over base layers
- Practical for daily wear and walking
Would I travel with it long-term?
Yes. It’s become my go-to layer for chilly days when I want warmth without the bulk of a full jacket.
Best use case in Australian conditions
Ideal for everyday wear, morning and evening walks, hikes, windy conditions and cooler travel days where you want warmth, comfort and easy layering.
Overall verdict
A practical, comfortable and versatile travel vest that delivers warmth, wind protection and packability without unnecessary bulk.
The North Face Women’s Jester Backpack
I used the Jester backpack extensively on a recent trip to Thailand and it quickly proved itself as a versatile travel and day pack.
On flights, it fit easily under the seat in front of me and comfortably housed my 16″ MacBook Pro, which is a big win when you want quick access to your tech without needing overhead storage.
Once on the ground, it became my everyday bag for carrying water, essentials and camera gear on day trips, just as we do when hiking back home.
Comfort has been excellent, even when loaded. The pack fits well and feels balanced, and both Kev and I were able to wear it comfortably without any pressure points, shoulder strain or back heat.
The wide, well-padded straps make a noticeable difference for longer walks, and back ventilation held up well in warm conditions.
The pocket layout is practical and easy to use. The bottle holders on both sides are genuinely useful and easy to access. The main compartments are simple and functional, and while I didn’t personally use the front bungee system, it’s handy for carrying a light jacket or extra layer if needed.
Access and zips have been smooth and secure, and I’ve had no issues opening the bag one-handed or feeling like anything was at risk of slipping out.
Size-wise, it hits the sweet spot. It’s the perfect day size for travel, flights, hiking and sightseeing without feeling bulky or under-sized.
From a durability perspective, it feels robust and well made and absolutely capable of handling regular travel use.
I had no annoyances or downsides during use.

- Comfortable fit for different body types
- Wide, well-padded straps with good ventilation
- Practical bottle holders on both sides

- Ideal size for day trips, travel and hiking

Final Thoughts – The North Face Gear Review
Overall, each of these pieces of The North Face gear performed exactly the way good travel and hiking equipment should. They were comfortable to wear for long days, practical across changing conditions, and easy to integrate into real travel routines rather than feeling like specialist gear that only works in narrow scenarios.
From the lightweight waterproof hiking shoes that handled mixed terrain, to the puffer vest that became a reliable go-to layer for cooler days. Plus the Jester backpack that transitioned easily between flights, day trips and hikes, the common thread was versatility and comfort.
None of the products required special treatment or constant adjustment. They simply worked, which is ultimately what matters when you’re travelling, walking daily, and relying on your gear in real-world conditions.
If you’re looking for travel and hiking gear that prioritises comfort, durability and practical performance over gimmicks, these pieces delivered well in everyday use.
