5 Tips To Travel Australia By Caravan What I Wish I Knew

If you’re planning your Big Lap of Australia to travel Australia by caravan, you’ve probably got a list a mile long of things to buy, plan and organise before hitting the road.

After living full-time on the road for over two years, I can tell you no matter how much you prepare, there are things you’ll only learn once you’re out there doing it.

Today, I’m sharing five lessons from our own travels that have saved us money, time and a few headaches. These tips will help you start your lap with more confidence and fewer regrets, no matter if you’re towing a caravan, travelling in a motorhome or exploring in a camper trailer or tent.

1. When You Travel Australia By Caravan, Your Setup Will Evolve

When we first left, I thought we had our caravan setup sorted. Every cupboard had its purpose, and I’d even planned a special spot for our big multi-function air fryer.

Within nine months, we’d completely reworked the kitchen, moved the air fryer to the tunnel boot, added a Sizzler barbecue and replaced our slide-out kitchen with a fridge slide.

The truth is, you won’t know exactly what works for you until you’re living in your van full-time.

My advice? Don’t stress about having everything perfect before you leave. Start with the basics, do a short trip close to home, and see what you really need. There are shops and caravan suppliers all over Australia so you can easily adapt along the way, just like we did.

2. Travel Slower Than You Think

When we first set off from Hervey Bay, we were full of energy and moving quickly. It didn’t take long to realise that constant travel is exhausting. Slowing down not only reduced our stress, but it also gave us more time to enjoy each place.

If you’re planning a 12-month lap, you won’t see everything, so make a must-see list and spend three or four nights in each stop when possible. Travelling slower saves fuel, helps your budget and keeps everyone, especially kids, much happier.

3. Budget for the Unexpected

Even if your caravan and tow vehicle are brand new, unexpected expenses pop up. For us, it was winter clothing. We left Queensland with barely a jumper between us and ended up shopping for warm gear in South Australia.

Other surprises might include gear upgrades, detours or changes to your setup. Have a buffer in your budget so these things don’t derail your trip.

And yes, pack a hoodie even if you’re heading north, Australian nights can be chilly anywhere.

4. Be Flexible With Your Plans

We left thinking we’d head north to Cairns. On our first night, we changed direction completely and ended up exploring the Queensland Outback town of Winton, and into Gulf country and the towns of Karumba and Normanton. Before heading across The Savannah Way and onto Cape York, months later.

Some of our best adventures came from unexpected detours and chance conversations with fellow travellers. Being flexible means you’ll discover hidden gems you didn’t even know existed.

5. Community is Everything

The friendships you make on the road will be some of the most valuable parts of your journey. Whether it’s sharing a campfire, swapping tips fillinf your water tanks, or joining online groups, community makes travelling richer and safer.
