We recently spent four days at Caloundra on the southern end of Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. We were there for a wedding, but still had plenty of time to take in the sights and relax!
RAMADA GOLDEN BEACH
We stayed in a studio spa room at the Ramada Golden Beach which is a Wyndham Resorts property. It was also where our friends who were getting married were staying. Our room was on the ninth floor. Our very generous sized balcony had the most amazing view of Pumicestone Passage and the northern tip of Bribie Island.
The balcony also had a decent sized outdoor table and chairs so was a lovely spot to relax with a beer. The lounge room had a comfy sofa, a small breakfast table plus a television with Foxtel available (handy for the music channel) The kitchen was small but had everything in it that you would need to prepare a simple meal. The bedroom had a queen size bed and could be screened off from the living room with sliding timber shutters. Our bathroom was a decent size although the spa bath wasn’t as large as I would have liked.
The resort facilities included a swimming pool, tennis court, games room and gym. There was also a restaurant downstairs although we didn’t try it out.
Straight after we checked in I took myself off for a walk along the foreshore of Golden Beach. It is the prettiest spot and would be really ideal if you had small kids as there were several sandy beaches dotted along the way and no waves as it is sheltered by Bribie Island. I also found a lovely boardwalk that went through a patch of mangroves and had the best views of Bribie Island.
Caloundra is a very popular holiday spot and we found the vibe to be very laid back. Friday morning we spent some time walking along the Esplanade and checking out the views. There is a fabulous kids playground there that has plenty of parking, loads of play equipment as well as barbeques and picnic areas. Kings Beach also boasts a water play area which I imagine would be very popular in summer.
Further south is a cafe strip and we were really spoilt for choice when it came to finding somewhere for brunch. We ended up choosing The Coffee Club and had a lovely meal there. We could have easily spent the whole afternoon sitting by the beach as it was such a lovely spot.
METS ON KINGS (CALOUNDRA SURF CLUB)
The wedding we attended was very small and private and after the ceremony we went to the local surf club – Mets on Kings for dinner. It is a small club with huge glass windows that look out over the water. As it was a Saturday night it was fairly busy, so I would recommend booking a table. We found the food to be very good. I had Creamy Garlic Prawn Fettuccine which was delicious. Drinks were a little expensive (about $40.00 for a bottle of champagne) but as it was a special occasion we didn’t mind.
We found a couple of other good spots for food just behind the Ramada Resort including the Golden Grill where we enjoyed a leisurely Sunday morning breakfast before heading home.
If you are looking for a relaxing break away I would highly recommend Caloundra. I saw loads of different accommodation options around including a large Big 4 Caravan Park.
