Today we visited the Gold Coast Caravan and Camping Expo. This is now an annual event on the Gold Coast and for the last two years has been held at Metricon Stadium at Carrara. We had previously been to other similar shows on the Gold Coast but let me tell you the set up at Metricon is awesome so hopefully the Expo will be here to stay.
For anyone who is thinking about getting into Caravanning or Camping one of the first things you should do before you make any decisions or purchases is visit a caravan and camping show. These kind of events are held all over Australia in most capital cities and major regional areas, so you should be able to find one close to you. We have been to quite a few shows over the years and they really are the most fantastic way to research a big purchase and all in one place!
We were very impressed with the number of exhibitors present at the Gold Coast Expo this year. There were loads of vans and camper trailers available for inspection. If you read this blog on a regular basis you will know that we presently own a Customline Camper Trailer but in about 18 months time we will be looking to upgrade to a van so we can start our ‘Big Lap’. So for us heading to the Expo today was all in the name of research.
There were several different van manufacturers at the Expo including Universal, Concept, Retreat, Jayco, New Age to name just a few along with some awesome camper trailers and motor homes. We were actually really impressed with the variety of new camper trailers available now. There were lot’s of different hard floor campers with fold out bed options and dinette options but still in a tough, fully off road camper trailer.
It was great to see the Cast Iron Boys – Camp Oven Cooking boys there doing cooking demonstrations. If you’ve never cooked in a camp oven or on an Oz Pig these guys are the experts!
There were plenty of stalls around selling camping, caravanning and four-wheel drive accessories. The guys at these stands are always so knowledgeable and helpful if you have any questions. Plus, you can often pick up a great bargain or two. Most of these stalls were located undercover which was a great way to escape the heat for a little bit. As this section is elevated it was a great way to catch a breeze too!
Food was reasonably priced (I thought) but drinks were expensive. Over $5.00 for a small cup of coffee. A beer in the upstairs bar area was in the region of $8.00 (we didn’t have one)
It was also good to see some Tourism bodies represented at this show. I love browsing these stands as they always have heaps of information on great destinations. I came home with a backpack full of info. We are now super keen on heading across to North Stradbroke Island.
All in all we were really impressed with the Expo. There is plenty of parking near the Stadium but we think the easiest way to get there is to catch the train to Nerang and then catch the shuttle bus to the Expo. It runs on a 20 minute loop and drops you right at the entrance. Easy!
