Well here we are at the start of 2016! I can’t believe how quickly 2015 passed or how busy it was. Sadly it hasn’t been busy because we have done lots of travelling. Work commitments for Brenden and I and school commitments for our kids have kept us home a lot more than we would have liked. That being said we have still managed a couple of great day trips as well as a couple of camping trips. I hope you enjoy reading 2015 – Our Year In Review!
The kids had always wanted to spend the day at Aussie World on the Sunshine Coast so we headed up that way for the day. After delivering them to the door we headed back down the highway and spent some time looking at caravans. So many to choose from but it’s all in the name of research at the moment. On returning to collect the kids we couldn’t resist stopping in at the Aussie World Pub (formerly the Ettamogah Pub) for a cold beer. Sadly the name Ettamogah Pub can no longer be used due to a legal dispute, but it’s still a great pub!
This month Miss Oz and I checked out the Gold Coast Food & Wine Expo. It was a worthwhile day out and one that we will probably check out again in 2016.
Miss Oz turned 16 and we headed into Surfers Paradise to Hogs Breath for dinner. I have to say it’s a bit of a family favourite. We don’t mind wandering around in Surfers of an evening either. There are often street performers around or you can just watch the world go by!
We visited the RAAF Amberley Heritage Centre which is located on Amberley Airbase here in Queensland with the Australian Air League Gold Coast Squadron. If you have an interest in aviation or history I highly recommend a visit to this museum. It is open on the third Sunday of the month and every Tuesday and Thursday for tour groups by prior arrangement.
We love getting out into the Gold Coast Hinterland and Hinze Dam is a great spot for picnic, a bushwalk or a mountain bike ride or in Brenden’s case somewhere to fly the drone.
I turned 50 and had a bit of a party at a favorite local watering hole – the Dublin Docks. It was a great afternoon/ evening with a couple of wonderful girlfriends making the trek up from Canberra. We also met up with friends (at Hinze Dam again) who had been travelling since the start of the year with their young boys. They gave us some serious travel envy I can tell you.
I also spent the weekend at Coolum Beach on the Sunshine Coast whilst Miss Oz was at a camp for Air League. It is another gorgeous spot with what seems like an endless beach and plenty of cafes and restaurants to grab a bite to eat in.
Saw us sell one of our houses and move into another which we are currently in the process of renovating. It was a big move but will be hopefully be worth it in the long term.
As the weather started to warm up a little we took the opportunity to take a drive out into the Gold Coast Hinterland. Just 40 minutes drive from the heart of the Gold Coast this area is full of the most beautiful National Parks you will ever see. Natural Bridge in Springbrook National Park is always a favourite.
This was probably our busiest month all year. Miss Oz jetted of to America on a school trip for two weeks. She had an awesome time but thinks Australia is way better! Ben and I spent a day at the Brisbane Museum which was holding a Dinosaur Exhibition. We then spent the rest of the day wandering around the Southbank Precinct. Located right on the Brisbane River it is a great spot to spend a few hours.
We also headed off to Rainbow Beach for a week. Rainbow Beach is still one of our favourite destinations and this was our third visit there. We spent the week camped with a great mate who was on his way back south after his own adventures in the Cape. Travel envy again!
Brenden and I managed a sneaky night away. We spent a night camped at Sharp Park at Canungra again in the Gold Coast Hinterland. It is a gorgeous spot and one I would highly recommend for a couple of nights of R & R!
Somehow we also managed to fit in a quick weekend at Brunswick Heads. Lucky it is only an hours drive from home so it is easily doable.
And that is pretty much where our year of travels finished. November was taken up with the kids finishing up at school and that soon filtered into December and Christmas preparations.
All in all 2015 has been a fantastic year and we are looking forward to more travel adventures in 2016.
