One of the best things about travelling in Australia, or anywhere else for that matter, is finding fantastic local food, wine and produce to sample. We have some of the best farms and wineries in the world here that produce an array of award winning goodies. It is one of my favourite things about travelling. But what if your travel opportunities are currently limited, like ours are? That’s why I was so excited when I heard about the Gold Coast Food and Wine Expo.
The Gold Coast Food and Wine Expo was held at the Gold Coast Convention Centre. With over 100 exhibitors from all the east coast it was well worth the $20.00 entrance fee. Miss Oz and I found plenty of goodies to tempt us.
The hall was quite crowded, but my first port of call was the Sirromet Wine stand. I sampled a lovely drop called ‘Love my Sweet Bubbly Rose’. With Valentine’s Day coming up this would be perfect for that occasion. If you are visiting the Gold Coast, Sirromet Wines are located at Mt Cotton. Just a 30 to 40 minute drive north of the Gold Coast they have a lovely restaurant and a cellar door.
It didn’t take long for Miss Oz to find the Karma Cupcakes stand. They were a little expensive but worth it as a treat and so beautifully decorated.
Queensland is famous for it’s pineapples. After all we are home to The Big Pineapple at Nambour. The Merbye Farms stand had pineapples that were possibly the sweetest and juiciest that I’ve tried. They also had an amazing non-alcoholic Pina Colada to sample! I’m sure it would be very easy to make it alcoholic though!
Byron Bay Chocolate Company, Chiasso Coffee Roasters, Maleny Cuisine, Pinegrove Gourmet and Mount Alexander Winery were other favourites. But I have to say the Vortik Fusion Chocolate Vodka was like nothing I’ve ever tasted before. I resisted temptation and didn’t buy any but it would be just magic to sip on a cold night with a camp fire near by!
The other big winner for me was the Kingaroy Cheese, especially their Bunya Black which is a triple cream style cheese with a layer of vine ash added to it for extra flavour. It was just divine and I will be paying them a visit next time we are in Kingaroy.
We rounded off our morning with a yummy turkish style pizza for lunch – mine was fetta, spinach and garlic, while Miss Oz had lamb and tomato. Absolutely yummy!
If you fancy checking out a Food and Wine Expo near you the Gold Coast hosts the first one for 2017 from 2oth January to the 22nd followed by Canberra from the 17th to the 19th February, 2017. I highly recommend it as a great day out and the perfect way to sample food and wine from different areas without lots of driving around. It also gave me some great ideas of places to visit when we are out and about next.
