I often get asked why camping is good for families. For us it’s simple – camping is all about spending time together as a family. We have been travelling and camping with our kids since they were little – not as much as we would like – but we have still managed a couple of big trips in that time, as well as lots of weekends away. We both work and now that our kids are teenagers, they have part-time jobs as well, so it is important for us to spend time together as a family. Lets face it, they are only young for such a short time and before you know it they are off doing their own thing.
Here are my top 5 reasons why camping is good for families:-
1. Getting Away From It All
There is nothing like a great bush or beach camp spot to get away from it all. We all lead such busy lives these days that it can be hard to find a good balance. Getting out into the bush gives you the chance to unwind and relax. Leave the phones etc behind and enjoy the peace and quiet of the bush. We take some fun games like Uno Attack or The Logo Quiz and laugh at how clever (or not) we are.
2. New Experiences
No matter where you go there are always new things to see and experience. Even if you are out in the middle of no where there is always some bush, a creek or a beach to explore. And in those areas there are always birds and other wildlife to see. Visiting a museum or finding somewhere different to eat are great fun as well. Kids are ‘sponges’ and even when they don’t realise it, they are learning new things all the time.
3. Fresh Air and Exercise
The best thing about travelling or camping is the opportunity to get outside and get some fresh air and sunshine onto our bodies. We spend so much time indoors whether it be at work or at school that we can miss out on this simple pleasure in life. We like nothing better than going for a walk along the beach or kicking the footy around the camp site. If there is water around then you will find our kids in it, either swimming or mucking around in their blow up boats.
4. Simple Cooking
We barbecue a lot when we are away or if we are able to have a fire we will cook something in the camp oven. Nothing tastes better than Roast Lamb in the camp oven and this is something the kids can help with as well. It’s also great to let them have a few treats like some marshmallows to toast on the fire.
