I was gifted a copy of this book to review by the author.
If you have ever dreamed of travelling anywhere in Australia, then you would know that just the thought of planning where you want to go can be quite daunting. And no wonder – Australia is huge! 7,692,024 km² of huge in fact, with over 900,000 kilometre’s of roads connecting even the most remote areas of this continent.
So it is just as well that author and traveller, Colin McFarlane has done most of the hard work for you in his book Travelling Australia By Road.
Colin has travelled over 200,000 kilometres in the last 10 years. I guess you could call Colin and wife and travelling companion Joan, experts in their field.
TRAVELLING AUSTRALIA BY ROAD
Travelling Australia By Road is clearly written, in plan commonsense English. So when you read it you almost feel like you are in the ‘backseat’ travelling along with Colin. Colin and Joan towed a caravan to most of the destinations in this book. However like most people, they preferred to use a tent when accessing more remote locations.
Covering every state in Australia, Colin has comprehensively listed possible routes that you could take to reach your chosen destination. Not only that he has included stops along the way, places to stay and things to see and do.
Looking at the chapter on Queensland, and choosing Longreach as your destination (and who doesn’t want to visit there?) you can choose from 3 possible routes, each one unique in their own way. Each route shows how many kilometres to your destination. It also suggests how many days it might take you to arrive at your destination. Every page includes fantastic photo’s, illustrating the highlights of that route.
Having travelled some of the Queensland routes myself, I really enjoyed looking back over places we’d been and things we had seen on our trip. I also discovered some things that we had missed. Often because we didn’t know about them or had not had time to stop and look at them.
But what I love most about this book, is the inspiration it gives you to get out and see more of Australia. Whether you are a first time traveller or a returning traveller I think there is something in this book for everyone.
There is so much information out there on travelling in Australia. But to have so much condensed into one volume to me is a great idea. This book would also make an ideal gift for the traveller or for someone who just wanted to learn more about Australia.
One thing you won’t find in here is the main cities and much of the coastal areas – Colin’s book really focus’ on the inland roads and towns. The true heart and soul of Australia.
